John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie – N’Bani
The Real Thing – Perception 2005 – PLP 2 (Originally Released 1970, PLP 2)
There are countless anecdotes about Dizzy getting dizzy on those jazz cigarettes. If you don’t believe them, all you need to do is check out Dizzy’s output from the Woodstock era. Fuzzy guitars, sloppy bongo riffs, Diz is more than halfway to a Santana album here. James Moody joins in on the tenor to provide some funky harmonized horn lines. With the exception of albums by Moody and Gillespie, singer Jimmy Curtiss’ Perception label was primarily focused on Soul music. This album find a comfy home there.
